The 65-year-old cyclist who was found dead on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail earlier this month has been named.
Jan Abraham van der Merwe, of Auckland, was found dead approximately two metres down a small bank just off the trail near Lake Ohau Lodge at about 10.15pm on Saturday, October 4.
A small Search and Rescue operation was sparked at 8.05pm after Omarama police were advised the man, who was cycling along the Lake Ohau Lodge to Omarama section of the trail, did not arrive at the Historic Wooldshed in Quailburn.
Southern District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said the man’s death is believed to have been caused by a medical event rather than a cycling accident.
He had left Lake Ohau Lodge at approximately 3.45pm and was found about 1.5 kilometres from the Lake Ohau Lodge end of the track.
Several SAR staff had remained with the deceased overnight and his body was recovered from the site the next day.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
