Art fair aims to build reputation for quality

More than 25 artists have already signed up for the Oamaru Art Fair.
The fair opens on Wednesday, March 16 and runs till Easter Monday, March 28.
Organiser Donna Demente said the artists would display “works of quality and compatibility with the kind of integrity and artisanship we want Oamaru to become more famous for”.
The response from artists had been “overwhelmingly positive”, she said.
The show will be launched on March 16 and will be open every day, apart from Good Friday, until March 28.
There will be a gala auction night on Thursday, March 24, at which works by some of the local artists will be offered in a live auction.
Proceeds (40% of sale price) would go to seed funding for next year’s inaugural “Handcrafted in Oamaru” festival of art, craft, gourmet food, wine and whisky, Ms Demente said.
Adventure Books owner Bill Nye had offered to produce a catalogue of works in the show and organisers would compile a separate catalogue of works that would be auctioned live, she said.
The venue for the fair, pending confirmation, is the former Birdlands site in Harbour St.
“The space is not enormous so we will encourage works that are not too large or just one or two pieces from artists who don’t have or do smaller work.
“We will possibly have to hang salon-style but that is very Victorian in essence.
“We are very much looking forward to adding another exciting event to Oamaru’s growing calendar of interesting reasons to visit and indulge in all that we have to offer.”
