Birdman to fly again at Oamaru Harbour

The weird and the wacky will be sailing through the air once again at the annual Port FM Birdman Competition in Oamaru Harbour on Sunday.

Organisers hope old favourites, such as Seagull Sam and SpongeBob Squarepants, make another appearance in the event which in the past has seen people dressing up as everything from telephone boxes to buzzy bees.

Port FM’s marketing manager Sue Fraser said entries were still being accepted for the event which will start 4.30pm at Holmes Wharf, Friendly Bay, on Sunday – coinciding with the Oamaru Harbour Regatta.

Mrs Fraser said the same categories as in past years would be contested. Each category winner will receive $300. The categories are: Longest Splash (Whitestone Panel Paint & Coach sponsors), Best Dressed (North Otago Ditching & Baling) and the Biggest Splash (Oamaru Trust).

From the category winners the judges will decide who will be the Ultimate Birdman for 2014.

The winner will receive the Lachie McLean Memorial Trophy from Lachie’s father Rod McLean.
