Eager for art auction

Art-lovers are eagerly awaiting a gala auction in Oamaru tonight.
Works by many renowned North Otago artists are being sold by an auctioneer at Smiths Grain Store from 7pm. The event begins at 6pm with catering by Sally-Ann Donnelly.
A glossy catalogue of the auction lots has been compiled by Bill Nye, the owner of Victorian Precinct business Adventure Books. It is available in the pop-up art gallery at 3 Harbour St, the premises formerly occupied by Birdlands Wine Company.
The paintings going under the hammer can also be viewed there, in the front area. The walls of the back room are hung with a large number of works for sale by various artists as part of the Oamaru Art Fair that opened on March 16.
Forty percent of sale prices from the auction would be used as seed funding for a new “Handcrafted in Oamaru” festival of art, craft, food, wine and whisky proposed to be held biennially from next year.
Tickets to tonight’s gala are available at the Grainstore Gallery, Adventure Books and the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust. The Oamaru Art Fair will be closed tomorrow, Good Friday, but open again from Saturday to Monday.
