Oamaru residents have the chance to be inspired by one man’s journey from the slums of Cape Town to the summit of Mt Everest.
Mountaineer Trevor Johnston will be giving a talk on his expedition to Mt Everest at Adventure Books on January 30.
Adventure Books owner Bill Nye said Mr Johnston grew up in the slums of South Africa, obtained an education and then climbed Mt Everest.
The talk will be about his rise out of the slums to the top of the world’s mountain, he said.
“He got a degree in teaching in Cape Town and then started climbing with a group of climbers.”
Mr Johnston is now living in Timaru as an administrator with his wife and children.
“He is quite an interesting fellow,” he said.
“What is appealing about his talk is that he is inspiring to all kinds of people.”
This will be the eighth talk Adventure Books has held; they try to do one each month, Mr Nye said.
The talk, Journey to Everest, will take place at Adventure Books on Thursday, January 30 at 7.30pm.
Nibbles and wine will be provided at the free event and everybody is welcome to attend.
