The building soon to be vacated by the Oamaru Mail team is set for earthquake-proofing and redevelopment, but the front facade will remain unchanged, allowing Thames St to maintain its existing streetscape.
Property owner and developer John Brown, of JBL Properties, said the new construction at 80 Thames St would retain the front facade of the building, which was built in the 1930s.
“Retaining the facade is a happy outcome and maintains the existing streetscape,” he said.
“This keeps the Oamaru charm while creating a solid, earthquake-resistant building which will be 100 per cent of the required building standard for earthquake protection.
“The new structure will comprise two levels and will be tenanted by the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ).”
Mr Brown said reconstruction work would begin next week, once the Oamaru Mail team had vacated the building.
