Alps 2 Ocean trail – now with added tables

Cyclists using the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail now have plenty of stops to rest at between Duntroon and Oamaru, thanks to the Waiareka Valley Lions Club.
After discussions, the club, as part of its centennial project, felt there was a need for more picnic tables at strategic locations along the trail, which extends more than 300km from Aoraki Mt Cook to Oamaru. Initially, three tables were planned. However, after club members travelled around the Duntroon to Oamaru section of the trail, they decided two more should be added.
Tables have been placed at regular intervals at points where there are good views of the landscape, such as the top of a climb, and where there is flat space to park bicycles away from the roadside and allow support vehicles to be parked nearby.
Gravel was poured under each table to prevent vegetation from becoming overgrown.
The Kakanui Community Catchment Project collaborated with the Lions on the project, which was also supported by local businesses, Kiwirail and the Oamaru Steam and Rail Society.
