A former Oamaru couple are the toast of the national wedding scene after winning Bride & Groom magazine’s Wedding of the Year competition.
Summer and Christian Robinson, who now live in Dunedin, were married at St Patrick’s Basilica on November 11, 2015 and held their reception at the Loan & Merc in the Victorian Precinct.
Mrs Robinson, nee Forgie, said she and her husband both grew up in the town, and still have strong family connections.
She described the day as perfect, including the weather, and wouldn’t change a thing.
“I would say it was a vintage floral wedding. Basically everyone said it was a reflection of me as a person . . . my husband certainly said so.”Mrs Robinson’s four bridesmaids wore flowing floral dresses, each of a different colour and print, while Mr Robinson and his groomsmen dressed in classic-cut charcoal suits and bow ties.
After the traditional ceremony and photographs, the couple and their invited guests moved on to the Loan & Merc.
“It was amazing. As soon as I saw the venue for the first time, it just had so many connections for us.”Mrs Robinson said few people knew she planned on entering the magazine competition.
“I documented every single thing about the wedding and I didn’t actually tell anyone I had entered, except for my mum and dad and my husband.
“It consumed me for a year and I wanted to document the whole thing. I never expected in my wildest dreams I would win.”She had to submit photographs of the day and provide other details, while she also described how the day itself went and how Mr Robinson proposed.
“After they called, I actually had to ring back and apologise because I cried my heart out and couldn’t speak because I was in shock. I was so happy because I had never won anything before.”The couple won a five-day holiday to Rarotonga, as well as a “large array” of homewares.
Mrs Robinson said anyone planning to get married should do so in Oamaru.
“I guess what I found really cool is that all of our friends are getting to see Oamaru. A lot of people don’t know how cool Oamaru really is and it’s the perfect location for a wedding.”A spread on the couple’s wedding is featured in Bride & Groom’s June edition, which came out on June 13.
