Council to take a fresh look at public gardens

The Oamaru Public Gardens is about to get a facelift.
A garden design was being created that, once completed, would enhance the gardens, the Waitaki District Council said.
Recreation manager Erik van der Spek said the gardens had been in the same location for decades, and as part of reinvigorating the beds, the council planned to change the layout.
As part of this, the large circular garden will be replaced with a shape depicting the gardens logo.
“Whitestone landscaping approached us with this idea,” Mr van der Spek said.
“The flowers and plants we’ve chosen to depict the logo will be eye-catching and add something unique to a very popular public amenity.
“We’re also looking at installing memorial seats in the gardens in the same vein as the memorial seats we’re installing at Friendly Bay and Cape Wanbrow.”“Some service groups have already expressed an interest in donating memorial seats and we’d be pleased to receive inquiries from members of the public.”People wishing to donate a memorial seat (which would have a named plaque attached) can contact WDSC parks officer Jane Matchett on (03) 433-0300 or jmatchett@waitaki.govt.nz
