The North Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club is giving members of the public an ideal opportunity to stretch the legs and see some lovely spots in and around Herbert Forest.
The club, in conjunction with forest owner Blakely Pacific and North Otago Search and Rescue, is offering guided tours of the forest on Sunday.
A public open day will include five guided trips through the indigenous areas of Herbert Forest:1. Podocarp Loop (1hr).
2. Swallows Track (1hr-1.5hr).
3. Hoods Creek Track (1hr-1.5hr).
4. Podocarp Circuit, including Glenburnie and Podocarp Loops (1hr-2hr).
5. Swallows, Podocarp and Hoods Creek tracks (3hr-4hr).
There will also be a special botanical walk with an expert on local native plants.
A club spokeswoman said it was an opportunity for people to “enjoy and marvel at” the only segment of mature podocarp forest left in North Otago.
Mature rimu, miro, matai, totara and kahikatea aged in the hundreds of years can be seen and touched, accompanied by the sounds of native korimako (bellbird) and kereru (New Zealand pigeon).
