A little lady with a huge heart has been recognised for her volunteer services.
Rita Thomas was taken unawares by being made a life member of Age Concern Waitaki at the organisation’s Oamaru meeting last Thursday.
She had given a talk to her fellow members about the work she does at the Oamaru Hospital, visiting patients and taking supplies such as magazines and newspapers.
“I enjoy it. I think patients that want magazines enjoy it.”
She urged others to consider joining her on her trips to the hospital.
When presented with a framed certificate and a bouquet of spring blooms, she said “Ooh, gosh, this is a surprise.”
Mrs Thomas said she does not know how many years she has been involved with hospital visits, but admitted she has worn out a walker making the regular treks to and from her Reed St residence.
“I just sort of eased into it.”
She has become such a familiar and trusted presence that the hospital staff allow her free access to do her good deeds.
“I’m always pleased to help anybody.”
