Long-lost Oamaru turtle reunited with owner

When Jeff Williams went to work at Awamoa Bins & Skips yesterday morning, he did not expect to be rescuing a long-lost animal.

At 11am, Mr Williams had been going about his day at the Chelmer St yard, when he got a huge fright after almost stepping on a turtle.

He took the turtle to the vet and posted his find on Facebook, hoping someone would recognise the creature.

Less than an hour later, the turtle’s owner had been located, only one street away – on Hooke St – and the 25-year-old turtle, which does not have a name, was back in Andrena McCarthy’s arms.

Ms McCarthy said her turtle had been missing since April and she had almost given up hope of seeing her pet again.

“I’m quite surprised. I had lost hope.”

By midday, the adventurous turtle was on her way home for a swim.
