Meeting proposed for Countdown mural idea

A meeting will be held in the near future to develop a concept for the proposed makeover of the Thames St wall of Countdown Oamaru.

Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher has been working with Countdown for approval to turn the large white wall into a mural.

The mural would be used as a way to encourage motorists on State Highway One to spend time in Oamaru.

Mr Kircher said he hoped to organise a meeting with a couple of local artists to start working on a concept in the next couple of weeks.

After they had decided on a concept, it would be given to Countdown head office to evaluate the options, he said.

Since he announced the idea earlier this month, he has had a lot of offers of help and comments about how positive the mural would be for the area.

“We have had lots of people express interest in helping out.

“We certainly appreciate the ideas and offers of help.”

The mural would also be used as a way to point out different features of Oamaru, he said.
