Usually the domain of rugby, football and cricket, Milner Park is to be transformed into a movie theatre.
The Waitaki Boys’ High School student council, with help from the Waitaki District Youth Council, will stage an open-air movie night on Saturday to raise funds for Literacy North Otago.
Waitaki Boys’ head boy Lance Schaffer (17) said a 6m-wide inflatable screen, to be erected in front of the park’s grandstand, and projector had been sourced for the screening of comedy classic Mr Bean’s Holiday.
He said it was a different approach for the school as far as fundraising was concerned.
“The student council wanted to do a major community fundraiser and as a result, we’ve come up with the idea of an open-air movie night.”
Lance said the reason the student council wanted to support Literacy North Otago was because of the vital role the organisation played in the community for people who struggled with reading and writing.
Preparations for the event were progressing well and he expected a decent number of people would come along to enjoy a fun night, either sitting in the grandstand or on chairs they were encouraged to bring.
“That’s what we wanted – a good night out. There’s not much to do in Oamaru, especially in the school holidays, and we want to encourage people to come along and sit down and relax, really.”
He said there would be tickets for a raffle on sale throughout the night, as well as food and drinks.
Gates open at 7pm, and the film is scheduled to start at 7.30pm.Sports ShoesShop: Nike
