An Oamaru couple have been creating hilarious parodies of well-known songs to be about life in lockdown.

When the country went into lockdown, John and Kristine McGeown challenged each other to write a song about it.

When Mr McGeown’s song was posted to social media, people loved it and asked for more.

“When we rewrote the Village People one [Y.M.C.A.], I made him dress up,” Mrs McGeown said.

“People needed a laugh – it kind of grew from there.”

Other songs they have parodied include Oompa Loompa, The Irish Rover, Blame It On The Boogie, All Shook Upand We Didn’t Start the Fire.

They have used their comprehensive collection of dress-ups for the videos.

“We got creative with some bits and pieces we had lying around,” Mrs McGeown said.

“The Village People outfit was a wig cut up for a moustache, and my woollen cap with a bracelet attached, and the Elvis suit was also used in the disco outfit, with a shirt and belt added.

“As for the Oompa Loompa [costume] – doesn’t everyone have one of those?”
