Nominations for October’s local body elections open today.
The triennial elections will let voters decide who they want to be mayor of Waitaki and who will be the representatives on the Waitaki District Council of the Oamaru, Waihemo, Corriedale and Ahuriri wards.
Elections for the Waihemo and Ahuriri community boards, each consisting of five members including one councillor, will also take place, as will an election for five positions on the Oamaru Licensing Trust.
On June 27, the Electoral Commission’s enrolment campaign started.
Forms for voters to confirm their enrolment details have been sent to all registers voters in the Waitaki district.
Waitaki District Council deputy electoral officer Carol Hansen said nominations for candidates were now open, while rolls were open for inspection at council offices and service centres.
“People can check they are on the roll and if they are not, they can grab an enrolment pack from NZ Post post or online.”
She said the council had candidate nomination books available at its offices and on its website, which contained information for those considering standing.
“It contains what they need to do. It’s about campaigning, social media and advertising and so on.”
Nominations and rolls close at noon on August 12.
After that date, anyone who is entitled to vote and who is not enrolled as an elector, or whose details are incorrectly recorded on the roll, will have to cast a special vote.
The election date and candidates’ names are made public by electoral officers on August 17, while voting documents are delivered to households between September 16 and 21.
Electors are encouraged to post their voting documents back to the electoral officer as soon as they have voted.
October 8 is polling day, when all voting documents have to be with the council before voting closes at noon.
Preliminary results are made public as soon as possible when all ordinary votes are counted.
Official results, including all valid ordinary and special votes, are declared when practicable or between October 13 and 19.
