A Herbert man received a bravery award from Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae in Wellington yesterday.
Central South Island Helicopters owner and chief operator John Oakes, received a silver award from the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand for a harrowing helicopter rescue in Antarctica in 2013.
Mr Oakes said he was humbled and surprised to receive the award yesterday.
