Ten Waitaki residents were welcomed to New Zealand yesterday when they were sworn in as New Zealand citizens at a ceremony in the Waitaki District Council chambers.
Citizenship certificates were presented to the new citizens and each person took the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance, declaring that they will honour the Queen, obey the laws of New Zealand and be a good citizen.
Dario Mendoza came from Chile and has been working as a veterinarian at Vetlife Oamaru for the last six years. He started as a small animal vet and now works with large animals.
His family Daniela Gonzalez and daughter Catalina Mendoza-Gonzalez said they were very excited to become New Zealand citizens and have enjoyed living in Oamaru. Catalina is in her second year at St Kevin’s College and was only six when they arrived from Chile. Son, Nicolas, 4, was born in New Zealand.
Others who became NZ citizens yesterday were Teodoro Bulatao, Mary Bulatao, Theanne Bulatao, Frances Bulatao, Andrew Kilgour, Elizabeth Harrison and Christiana Skinner.
Year 9 Waitaki Girls’ High School student, Bronwen Ardouin, sang the New Zealand national anthem during the ceremony, accompanied by harpist Lynley Caldwell.
