East Otago High School pupil Nicole McLeod is one of four New Zealanders selected to attend the Singapore International Science Camp.
The Royal Society of New Zealand chose Nicole, two Auckland secondary school pupils and one from Dunedin for the prestigious trip.
“This is a great way to inspire our talented students to consider a career in science and technology,” Royal Society chief executive Andrew Cleland said.
The New Zealanders will join pupils from India, Brunei, Vietnam and Singapore in a science programme targeted at the 15 to 17-year age group. It will showcase ground-breaking technologies and give the pupils a better understanding of genetic engineering, self-driving vehicles and 3-D printers. They will also participate in workshops and attend lectures by renowned researchers and professors and academics.
Nicole (16), a year 12 pupil, passed NCEA Level 1 with excellence. Her studies this year include all three sciences.
East Otago High School principal Lennox Sharp said it was a “stunning achievement to be selected as one of four” to attend from this country.
“She’s a dedicated, committed student who gives everything 100%.”Nicole’s mother Leanne McLeod, the school’s office administrator and funding co-ordinator, said her family was “just so proud of her; she’s worked so hard”.
Nicole’s two younger siblings both wanted to follow in her footsteps, Mrs McLeod said.
She was thrilled to see her daughter grow from a shy young girl into someone who could put herself forward for such an opportunity.
It would not have been possible without the support of the staff at East Otago High School, Mrs McLeod said.
Nicole was considering becoming a pathologist in the future and studies at the University of Otago were a possible precursor.
She leaves for Singapore on May 17 and returns on June 4.
The Talented School Students Travel Award, managed by the Royal Society and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, will pay for 70% of the New Zealanders’ registration and travel costs.om20science1
