A bench seat overlooking the Oamaru Public Gardens croquet lawn has been installed by the North Otago Federation of Women’s Institutes.
The project commemorates 95 years of Women’s Institute in New Zealand, with each federation asked to erect a seat at a popular site in its region.
The four institutes that make up the
North Otago federation chose the Oamaru site.
The park bench was unveiled at 1pm on Tuesday in front of a crowd of supporters.
Federation president Denise Leonard acknowledged the Waitaki District Council, which had given a community grant for the project and made gardens staff available to help. Rural parks officer Jane Matchett was singled out for special praise.
The institutes had also raised funds by selling cheese rolls and raffle tickets. The public and former federation president Noeline Bowman were thanked for their input.
