Festive cheer . . . Contractors put the finishing touches on Oamaru’s Christmas tree, opposite the Waitaki District Council offices on lower Thames St. This year’s decorations feature large bows, lights, a star for the top of the tree and other decorations valued at $700, donated by Dot Smith, of Riverstone Country. Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher felt the tree was a vast improvement on the 2014 version. ‘‘We have certainly stepped it up this year. The feedback has been really positive — there are a few grinches out there, but there are people that love Christmas and are getting real pleasure out of it.’’ It is possible more decorations will be added.
