Talent show fundraiser “Stars In Your Eyes”is returning to Papakaio on Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9.
Based on British television show Stars in Their Eyes, the show gives everyday people the chance to be a star for the evening by dressing up as their musical idol and belting out one of their tunes on stage.
Each contestant is featured in a 30sec clip which will show what they looked like before and after their transformation.
Last year’s edition of the show, which raised money to refurbish the event venue, the Papakaio Community Centre, attracted 15 entries.
Organiser Barbara O’Brien said one more performer would take to the stage this time.
“It was a lot of fun last year and I had a lot of people ringing me this year keen to be in it.”
The Friday night show starts at 7.30pm, while Saturday night’s cabaret show starts at 8pm and will be followed by a DJ and dancing.
People can vote for their favourite act at the Saturday show, and a judging panel will pick the winner.
Mrs O’Brien said the Friday show was better suited for families as it would start and finish earlier. Ticket sales were steady.
“We’ve got about five tables left for the Saturday out of 20, and some more for the Friday night.”
Funds raised at last year’s show were used to start the refurbishment of the community centre, which Mrs O’Brien said had not changed since the 1980s.
“Last year, we raised quite a bit, so we got the downstairs part of the hall painted. Now we are trying to get the upstairs done.”
Tickets are $20 for the Friday show and $45 for Saturday’s cabaret show, and are available from the Oamaru I-Site.
Doors open at 6.30pm both nights.
