Tributes flow for young farm worker

Tributes flowed on Facebook yesterday after police announced that Jed David Kennedy, 18, a farm worker, of Herbert passed away in Dunedin Hospital on Tuesday night.

Mr Kennedy was struck by a milk tanker on State Highway 1 just south of Maheno in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was a former pupil at Waitaki Boys’ High School and played rugby for the Maheno Rugby Club.

Oamaru Police sergeant Tony Woodbridge released a statement yesterday which stated:

“Jed Kennedy died overnight as a result of his injuries and the matter has been referred to the coroner.”

Police said the family had asked for complete privacy.

Mr Kennedy’s funeral will take place at Waitaki Boys’ High School on Saturday November 8 at 11am in the Hall of Memories.

Mr Kennedy was a member of the Waitaki Boys’ High School First XV last year. His coach Shane Carter said Mr Kennedy would be sadly missed.

“He was an enthusiastic and energetic young man, and those are the attributes that come to mind as a coach, he’ll be sadly missed by the community and we send our condolences to his family. “

– Jed mate it’s been many years since being at hostel with you, but the time I was with you was an absolute laugh, you were always the person that entered the room and made people laugh, your sense of humour was one out of a bunch and your ease in getting along with people was a prime talent. It’s a true shock mate, rest easy and fly high buddy, save a space so we can catch up one day. RIP Jed .
