Floral creations on the theme “Art with a Twist” have adorned the Oamaru Opera House foyer this week.

The seven arrangements were entries in the North Otago Floral Art Club’s Floral Designer of the Year Competition. The winners were announced by visiting Waimate judge Viv Tumaru on Tuesday. She congratulated the designers for their “striking” interpretations of the theme.

The novice section was won by Lynda Hoskins, who is in her final year of that category before moving up to the open section. Club president Jan Wheeler said the framed display of art supplies amid irises was “better than a van Gogh painting”.

Barbara Watt won the open section with a piece comprising a helix of 92 coloured pencils, each with two holes drilled in it.

Mrs Wheeler said the designers had produced “the most amazing displays this year”.

“Your enthusiasm, talent, and innovation are boundless. I’m constantly astounded by them.”

Club members meet monthly and create floral arrangements each week for the Forrester Gallery and Waitaki District Council headquarters foyer. During next month’s Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations, they will have floral designs on display in St Luke’s Church with the theme of “Grace and Forgiveness”.
