The weekend’s Steampunk Festival had a surprise wedding ceremony in the midst of the festivities.
Festival co-ordinator Helen Jansen and co-organiser Iain Clark surprised the crowd by getting married after the fashion show on Sunday.
Ms Jansen said they decided to do it during the festival as many of their friends had travelled to Oamaru for the weekend.
“The steampunk community is like our big family,” she said.
“We had friends from the whole of New Zealand there and those are the people that we wanted to share the special moment with.”
They did not tell people beforehand as they did not want any fuss, Ms Jansen said.
“We just wanted to formalise that in as an eccentric way as possible.”
After the fashion show, they started to tell the story of how they met in the Steampunk world, which is different from reality, she said.
The celebrant came in as part of the story and when people started to cotton on, they had to calm the crowd down to finish the proceedings, Ms Jansen said.
“The crowd went ballistic, it was just so fun.”
They planned to finish cleaning up from the festival, then in the near future, visit family who could not come to the ceremony, she said.
