The family of an Oamaru five-year-old who was killed in a collision near Moeraki in February say it is “disappointing and agonising” that the driver charged with her death will be appealing his sentence.

In the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday Jing Cao (32), of China, was jailed for 18 months by Judge Kevin Phillips for dangerous driving causing the death of Ruby Marris (5), after he crashed into her family’s station wagon in his rented Ford Ranger on State Highway One near Moeraki on February 21.

However, an appeal against the sentence was lodged with the Christchurch High Court on Wednesday.
