A crime spree, which involved stealing a car from a young mother, has landed a 16-year-old Oamaru male in court.
A warrant to arrest had been issued for the male after he failed to appear in the Oamaru Youth Court on Wednesday and he was located on District Rd, Weston at 7.20pm that evening in a stolen Toyota Corona.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said the offender had allegedly been hitchhiking out of Dunedin on Wednesday afternoon and was picked up by a female victim at 3.30pm on Pine Hill.
The woman stopped at a child care centre in Waikouaiti to pick up her children and the 16-year-old took off in the car leaving the victim stranded with her two small children.
When the car was located in the evening he had disposed of the car seats and it is believed he has also got rid of some property including a handbag near Shag Point, Sergeant Woodbridge said.
Police are still looking for these items.
The man appeared in the Dunedin Youth Court yesterday morning and was also charged with a petrol drive-off from the BP on Thames St on Monday evening, shoplifting tobacco from South Dunedin on Sunday evening and shoplifting tobacco from North Dunedin on Wednesday.
