An upgrade of the Duntroon water supply is on the cards if final approval is given at a meeting of the Waitaki District Council on August 6.
The upgrades will add nearly $400 per year to the unit water rate for those properties connected to the supply.
Water quality issues have been an ongoing problem for Duntroon which draws its water from a shallow bore that is prone to contamination from surface water run-off. There are no treatment processes between the source and the consumer. The Health Act requires that the water supply be upgraded by July 1, 2015.
Members of the council Assets Committee recently recommended that council install filter and UV units in the existing Duntroon Water Supply raw water take in order to comply with the Health Act, at an estimated cost of $110,000.
A report to council noted that the Duntroon water sub-committee and the owner of the land on which the existing bore and shed sit are happy with the proposed upgrade.
