Waitaki Girls’ High School pupil Gabrielle de Reus hopes her love of foreign languages will one day lead to travelling the world. The 18-year-old was named the school’s dux for 2016 at its senior prizegiving on Monday, capping off a fine year that resulted in several other academic awards. Gabrielle said she did not expect to pick up the accolade.
“I couldn’t believe it. I thought Nicole [Bond] would get it _ and then I burst into tears.” She will relocate to Wellington early next year to embark on the next stage of her education, which involves studying German and Chinese at Victoria University. “I love German,” she said. “I’ve done German since I started high school and I wanted to do another language that was very different, too.”
Gabrielle is not sure exactly what is in store when she completes her degree, but says it will definitely include seeing more of the world. “I’m not quite sure where it’ll take me _ maybe teaching one of those languages or teaching English _ but something involving travel.” With exams looming, she was putting in a lot of last-minute study before her first exam on Wednesday. Gabrielle was confident she had done everything within her power to pass with flying colours. “I think I’ll pass everything, but I’m just not sure how well I’ll do,” she said. Gabrielle attributed her academic success to working hard and managing her time effectively, and believed if a young Waitaki Girls’ pupil wanted to be named dux, she should do the same. “Get your work done on time and don’t leave it to the last minute, and just try to keep up with everything,” she said.
