Mandarin course kicks off

Chinese Mandarin lessons are set to start this week for Waitaki Boys’ High School and St Kevin’s College students.

The two Oamaru secondary school are embracing the emerging business and trade market, and offering the language course as another opportunity for the students.

The Chinese Mandarin teacher Emma Qui arrived in Oamaru last week, accompanied by University of Canterbury Confucius Institute deputy director Hong Hu.

The language option is part of a programme with the Confucius Institute and Miss Qui’s schedule has her teaching at both SKC and WBHS.

The language option was discussed by WBHS rector Paul Jackson and SKC principal Paul Olsen, after a 10-day trip to China earlier in the year.
