Totara School pupils got a healthy, but tasty and fun cooking lesson from chef Chris Fortune yesterday.
He’s touring the country with his family, and mobile Kids Can Cook Kitchen, visiting schools with a focus on teaching young kids how to cook, especially healthy meals using produce that they have grown themselves, either in their school gardens or at home.
A sous chef from each class was kept busy whisking and grating while the rest of the pupils, and teachers, learnt fun facts about cooking, as well as tasting the healthy treats, including crepes filled with a mixture of apple, silver beet and marigold.
Dunedin-bound, Mr Fortune said he particularly liked visiting rural schools around the country, so he had really enjoyed his Totara stop.
“Rural schools always have great gardens, they’re always just really invigorating schools,” he said.
