Weston School officially opened its new Modern Learning Environment yesterday.
The Modern Learning Environment was opened by Waitaki mayor Gary Kircher, along wtih the oldest and youngest pupils at the school, Emma Petrie and Macee McDonald respectively.
The new building was constructed at a cost of $500,000.
Weston School principal Nicky Ryan was delighted with how the outcome of the project.
“It’s beyond a dream come true,” she said. “It’s fantastic. We are just truly overwhelmed with how well it’s turned out.”
The new classrooms feature plenty of modern technology, as well as some new furniture which was fundraised for by Home and School.
Mrs Ryan said children’s learning would move to the next level with the new classrooms.
“They are just so interactive and teachers can easily move between pupils and do a lot more one-on-one work,” she said.
A particularly pleasing aspect of the project was that the building was completed in one stage instead of two, Mrs Ryan said.
“They were going to look at doing it in two stages, but thanks to the help of the ministry, we got it done in one stage. Thanks to our builder Carl Banks, who has done a fabulous job on the building for us.”
Mr Kircher, a former Weston School pupil, was impressed with the new facility.
“Its great to see that the investment made by the ministry and the school to this project over the last few years has turned out so well,” he said.
The principals of the district’s three high schools were also present at the opening.
Ministry of Education director of education Julie Anderson said it was great to see the work that had been done on the building.
“Teachers, pupils, and everyone else are going to get fantastic use out of the Modern Learning Environment,” Mrs Anderson said.
Pupil Elisha Carter said she loved the fact that the children would be able to decide how the new classrooms would look.
“We’re allowed to have the furniture the way we’d like,” she said.
