Young dancers progress in leaps and bounds

Waitaki Girls’ High School pupils took to the dance floor yesterday when a Royal New Zealand Ballet dance educator visited the school.

Pupils were taught the Peter and the Wolf ballet in a ballet workshop held by dance educator Abby Dutton, who is part of Tutus on Tour.

The girls had embraced the ballet, and despite variations in ballet experience, everyone enjoyed themselves, she said.

Waitaki Girls’ High School performing arts teacher Sherilyn Hellier said pupils had done “very well” at the dance workshop.

“I’m really impressed with how quickly they’ve taken it up.

“It makes me so happy to see girls taking advantage of opportunities that are there for them.”

The girls had a mix of skill levels and dance styles so had done “exceptionally well” to pick up the ballet as fast as they had, she said.

Tutus on Tour performed at the Oamaru Opera House last night.
