The pedestrian who is in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital, following an accident near Maheno in the early hours of Sunday morning, has been named.

Oamaru Police Sergeant Blair Wilkinson confirmed yesterday that Jed David Kennedy, 18, a farm worker, of Herbert, sustained serious injuries after being struck by a truck on State Highway 1 just south of Maheno shortly after 1am.

Sergeant Wilkinson said police were investigating the incident and had managed to establish Mr Kennedy’s movements prior to the accident.

He had allegedly been involved in a single-vehicle crash on Willowview Rd before setting off on foot approximately 30 minutes prior to being struck by the north-bound truck and taken by rescue helicopter to Dunedin Hospital, the sergeant said.

Sergeant Wilkinson could not confirm whether alcohol was a factor as they were still waiting for results from a blood test.

Mr Kennedy is a former Waitaki Boys’ High School student and plays for the Maheno Rugby Club.

Maheno Rugby Club president James Symes said he did not want to comment on the incident out of respect for the 18-year-old’s family.

A spokesperson for Fonterra confirmed the truck was a Dunedin Carrying Company Ltd truck, which is a contractor for them.

Police said the driver of the truck was shaken but unhurt.

Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident.
