Access from Oamaru to Kakanui via Beach Rd is now back open following the slip last weekend.
The one-lane passage for drivers has been created well over from the old road to lessen the likelihood of an accident should another slip occur.
Waitaki District Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said it was an achievement to get the road open as quickly as they had.
“It’s fantastic the road is open so quickly, because the detour via Fortification Rd and Seadown Rd was a very windy road, so it’s good to have the main route back open.”
Mr Jorgensen said it would be some time before there was a decision made on the road becoming two lanes again.
“There will be a lot of consultation and decisions required before the final decision on the two lane road is made,” Mr Jorgensen said.
The stretch of road where the slip occurred on Beach Rd has been closed and a temporary fix has been placed further inland with a 30km/h speed limit.
Mr Jorgensen was grateful for all the work that had been done to successfully get traffic back on the road.
“I want to give a huge thanks to everyone who had made the opening of the road happen so quickly. It’s fantastic to see all this support in the region.”
