The rare carmichaelia hollowayii is only found in three places, all of which are located in the Waitaki Valley.
As part of Conservation Week, Department of Conservation ranger Graeme Loh is speaking at the Oamaru Public Library tonight to discuss a project taking place at a reserve on Gards Rd, near Duntroon, where the rare plant is found.
“There are several other very rare plants at Gards Rd but the carmichaelia, a native ‘broom’ leafless shrub, is only found in three places, all in the Waitaki Valley on limestone outcrop,” he said.
There are fewer than 60 plants in the wild in total.
