New role a ‘steep learning curve’

A national Department of Conservation restructure has resulted in an Oamaru-based position being established, which will advocate for local conservation.

Kakanui’s Andrew Powazynski’s new role is North Otago Ranger Partnerships Kaitiaki Manutataki, which will see him work with iwi, businesses, local authorities and communities to benefit conservation, not only locally, but nationally.

“The position is brand spanking new,’ he said.

“Fortunately for me, I live in Kakanui anyway.”
