A recent wallaby “search and destroy” mission conducted by Environment Canterbury (ECan) south of the Waitaki River has bagged 19 wallabies.
Sightings of wallabies in the Waitaki district and other areas of Otago aren’t uncommon, and organisations such as the Otago Regional Council (ORC) and ECan are taking steps to ensure the animal, listed as an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993, doesn’t make further headway south of the Waitaki.
The animal ranges over more than 300,000ha of South Canterbury, which is part of ECan’s wallaby containment zone.
