It was a fun, festive, family day out yesterday afternoon, as crowds gathered for the Christmas in the Park event, organised by House of Breakthrough Oamaru.
Entertainment at Takaro Park included carols, a free bouncy castle, face painting and a tug of war competition, along with family picnics. At the event, nominated local families also received an extra Christmas boost in the form of a treat-filled hamper.
Christmas in the Park event organiser Jacinda Goodsir said they were giving the hampers to people who needed a boost and needed to have some Christmas joy.
People had been able to nominate a deserving family over the last few days and four were chosen from those nominations yesterday.
This was the second year they had done this, however, last year they gave out vouchers.
This year, they thought it would be nice to present something the families could use straight away, Mrs Goodsir said.
The hampers were filled mainly with food – lots of Christmas goodies and a few practical things too, she said. The hampers were created by using funds from money the House of Breakthrough set aside each week for people in need, Mrs Goodsir said.
