Oamaru residents need to get their best outfits and craziest hats ready for the Melbourne Cup Day at Portside Restaurant & Bar this afternoon.
The event will be held from 3pm, with all proceeds going towards the new Otago Community Hospice development in Oamaru.
Organiser Sally-Ann Donnelly said she is expecting about 100 people to come dressed to the nines for the event.
She is especially looking forward to seeing who comes in with the wackiest hat.
“I’ve seen some really crazy stuff.”
They will be offering delicious canapes, holding a spectacular auction and will be giving out prizes to the best dressed and the person with the craziest hat.
“It will be a great afternoon.”
The Oamaru Club’s Travel Club 60 will hold a fashion parade at 5pm.
Sports Central Brewhouse is also hosting a Melbourne Cup event this afternoon with food platters, the chance to win TAB vouchers and staff to help people place their bets.
TAB announced that in the lead-up to the 154th Melbourne Cup that Kiwis had been backing their homegrown contenders.
As of Monday morning, punters had favoured Kiwi sensation and Auckland Cup winner Who Shot Thebarman, who has been backed on the TAB books to the tune of around half a million dollars.
