Former Highlander and All Black Nick Evans is enjoying some time in Oamaru before his Queenstown wedding to fiancée Sally McLennan next week. Oamaru Mail sports reporter James Ford spoke to the 34-year-old about his move from New Zealand, his seventh season with the Harlequins in England and his pick for the Rugby World Cup.

“Oamaru is awesome, when I played for the Highlanders we came up here quite a bit and played a couple of preseasons up here, I think it was the Chiefs and the Crusaders we played,” said Evans, while enjoying a cup of tea at Steam Cafe, which is owned by his fiancée’s parents Toni and Derek.

“It’s brilliant. It’s small town New Zealand. We’re in London and it took me a couple of years to get over how many people are there. It’s nice to come back here. Usually I’m here when the Steampunk (festival) is on, and that’s brilliant.”

Despite his busy season schedule, Evans still makes time to keep up with Super Rugby and was impressed by the Highlanders 36-9 demolition of the Chiefs in Invercargill last Saturday.
