It has been 10 years today since the nation was rocked by the death of world-renowned author Janet Frame and her impact on the country is still being felt strongly, especially by those closest to her.
Frame was born in Dunedin in 1924 and lived in Oamaru during her childhood between 1931 and 1943.
Local author and poet Shirley Gillies, a classmate at school with Frame, has fond memories of the “extremely clever” and strong young woman in her class.
“I feel that the world has lost a lot of wonderful literature that she might have produced.
“She was, of course, a most talented author and much admired by everybody.”
Oamaru Mail reporter Ruby Harfield has spoken to friends, family and supporters about their memories of the author.
