Making a splash

The holiday period has been a bright one for the Waitaki Aquatic Centre.

With all this fine weather the region has had of late and very little rain plenty of people have been flocking to the pool.

Waitaki Aquatic Centre manager Matthew Lanyon said it was quite pleasing.

“It’s a bit unexpected really, and although I haven’t checked the numbers as of yet, I’d say we are slightly up on this time last year, which is awesome considering the summer we’ve had,” he said.

“I would’ve expected most people to head to the lakes, beaches and rivers, but we’ve had plenty and it’s been great.”

Mr Lanyon said he feels the safety of the swimming pool is why people head indoors.

“There’s always people on duty and watching and that makes a big difference because there’s been a number of drownings over the last year, we are always alert here.”

Holidays programmes have been on over the period and Mr Lanyon said they’ve been popular.

“Kids always enjoy coming to them and we’ve had a bit on, we had the learn to swim programmes, the boat and survival safety lessons, we have water polo and various other activities as well as third party groups like the Oscar Holiday programme coming to use the pool.”

“But at the same time we’ve had a large number of tourists visit the pool,” he said.

Mr Lanyon feels the rise in numbers is down to the top class facilities here in Oamaru.
