Oamaru band ready to rock!

The Smokefree Rockquest will hold extra significance for Oamaru’s only band tonight when they perform at the regional finals in Timaru.

The band Kudos, formed by a bunch of music mad studentsand some of their fans, will head to Timaru to compete against 14 other bands and for the chance to be regional champion.

The band consists of 6 members, Joe Martin, 16, lead vocals, Shannon Martin, 18, back-up vocals, both home educated, Alex McCulloch, 14, drummer, Waitaki Boys High, Jack Sinclair, 16, lead guitar, Kyle Andales, 17, rhythm guitar and vocals and Shaun Andales, 16, bass all St Kevin’s College.

Playing music is a passion of the bands and lead singer Joe Martin was confident they could deliver tonight.

“We are all looking forward to it and are confident we can win it.”

This will be the one and only chance for the band to attend the rockquest with band members heading different directions next year.

“This will be our one and only chance at it, so we know we will have to do well,” Mr Martin said.

At rockquest bands have to sing their own music, something Kudos have no problem with doing.

The band joined about a year ago after the music mad pupils were playing in different groups and after getting to know each other decided they would form the band.

Band member Jack Sinclair was the brains behind the band name.

“I was really into Nirvana at the time and was listening to them and came upon the word Kudos, which means respect, and knew that was the right name for the band.”

While the bands ultimate goal is to place in the top two tonight and then try and gain one of eight spots for the national’s, they will be disappointed if they don’t get that far.

“We would love to make the national’s and hopefully win it, but we have to see what happens,” Mr Sinclair said.

Not making nationals isn’t a bad thing with bands like Opshop, Midnight Youth and Smashproof not winning rockquest but becoming well known in New Zealand.

The band could also win the people choice award if you want them to text kudos to 2567.
