The Oamaru Marae Te Whare Koa Community Marae is set for a makeover.
Located on France St, which is between Ribble and Usk St, the marae is one of three in the North Otago area with the other two located in Morven and Moeraki.
Te Whare Koa Community Marae has been around in North Otago since the 1980s and is in desperate need of a makeover.
Te Whare Koa Community Marae trustee member Joseph Cropley said the marae did require some work.
“It will need some new paint, some carpet, fix the holes in the roof and give it a general tidy up to get it how we’d like it,” he said.
While the marae does get used, Mr Cropley said he’d love to see people use it a lot more.
“We do still use it, but we’d love to see it all done up which we think should help with us being able to find people to hire it out,” he said.
On Sunday there will be a hangi held at the marae to help raise funds.
“We are holding a hangi on Sunday to raise money for the marae to help us fix it up and the hangi will be available to the first 100 people who buy tickets.”
Fellow trustee member Mike Mullins, who joined up with the marae earlier this year said they would love to see a good turnout on Sunday.
“We are hopeful that people will come along on Sunday to lend a hand with the digging up of the hangi,” Mr Mullins said.
Mr Mullins said they would be incredibly thankful if anybody had any food or anything they would be willing to donate for the hangi on Sunday.
The hangi will go down about 7:30am and be brought up around 12:30pm.
There are 100 tickets being sold for the hangi, with well over half of them sold already,
People can email email@example.com if they would like a ticket. Tickets cost $10.
