Weston residents Merv and Elaine Sandri will celebrate 60 years of marriage today.

The couple met in Naseby in 1950 while Mr Sandri was on a cricket trip and were married at St Paul’s Church, Oamaru, on March 12, 1955.

While the actual anniversary is today, they held a celebration with 65 friends and family last weekend at the North Otago Golf Club.

Mr Sandri, who came to Oamaru aged about 4 from Roxburgh, said he had been a very lucky man.

“I’ve had a very happy marriage.

“We’ve been blessed with a wonderful family and children –¬†they are our pride and joy.”

Mrs Sandri, who was born in Naseby, said she really enjoyed the celebration over the weekend.

For their first few years of knowing each other, Mrs Sandri still lived in Naseby and they communicated through letters.

The couple have lived in Oamaru all their married life and have five children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They both have had a long involvement in many different sports and organisations in the region.
