Snow was expected to fall in Oamaru last night after blanketing much of the Waitaki Valley and causing power cuts on Thursday and Friday.
Metservice meteorologist Emma Blades said a strong south-westerly was expected to bring snow to sea level around much of the South Island last night, including Oamaru and inland parts of North Otago.
The temperatures, which could fall as low as -2degC, would be “biting” and, with the wind picking up yesterday evening, would feel even colder, she said.
