Fire blaze outcome narrowly missed

Investigations are continuing into a suspicious fire on Wharfe St yesterday morning.

At about 4am a tree was set alight and there was also a small fire outside Edna McCulloch Kindergarten sometime overnight.

The tree on Wharfe St ignited just metres away from a car, so the outcome could’ve “very easily” been much worse, Principal Rural Fire Officer Steve Couper said.

The Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to the fire at about 4am at which time the tree was well alight.

Mr Couper said they spent about 20 minutes at the scene, during which time they also washed the ash off cars in the area.

Because of the extensive damage to the tree, it was unclear yesterday how it had been lit, but it was being treated as suspicious.
