Phone lines restored, bridge still a no-go

Danseys Pass resident Jo Todd answered the phone with surprise yesterday.

The Oamaru Mail was the Todds’ first phone call in a number of days after floods washed away Bridge 66, affecting their phone line.

“It’s a novelty,” she said.

The bridge fell victim to large logs just before dawn on Monday morning.

Contractors were working in the area yesterday, including the ford.

“It was still too deep for a small 4WD to go across,” she said.

It is the worst Mrs Todd has seen the river but her husband, Barry, remembers an earlier flood which damaged only a part of the bridge.
