The Cape Wanbrow recreational area has been temporarily closed due to significant forest damage caused by the recent storm. Waitaki District Council recreation manager Erik van der Spek said strong southerly winds, combined with heavy and prolonged rain, had caused numerous trees to be uprooted, making the area unsafe for public use.
“In these conditions, trees are highly vulnerable to wind-throw, due to their root anchorage being compromised,” he said.
“Approximately six pockets of trees have blown over along the walking tracks, with other trees damaged or leaning dangerously, creating hazardous conditions.”
